The Military Draft: against the rights of every citizen

When asked about the draft, Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said the following:

"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it."

The draft should never be re-instated. Every citizen in this country should have the right to do what they want with their life, when they want to do it. No matter what the benefits that might come with the draft, no body wants to be told what to do, nor should they be told. And the United Nations knew this. Here are just a few clauses in the Declaration of Human Rights that would be violated if there ever was another draft:

-Article 3: Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person.
-Article 4: no one shall be held in mandatory servitude
-Article 20: no one may be forced to belong to an association
-Article 23: Everyone has the right to choice of employment

Hopefully there never will be another draft, but if there is, expect chaos. There is a voluntary service and that is how it should stay. And to be honest, I do not expect a draft any time soon. Politicians who would have to vote for it know that they would never win re-election and more importantly wouldn't want to send their own sons into battle.

There is a place for the military draft during a justified war when our country is under attack and the military has to respond. The military has to have the troops to protect our country when the need exists. I would not vote for a draft at the present time because the war in Iraq was an unnecessary war that has over extended our military. President Bush's action by starting a war in Iraq over WMD that did not exist has set the military back for years. I think the government should have a program that would encourage young men to join the military on their own. After all we have many other programs that apply to other issues. The bottom line is that the unnecessary war in Iraq has acutally discourage our young people from joining.

There should NEVER, EVER be another draft. All a draft is is forced servitude; slavery. I don't believe you would need a draft if our country were attacked. You wouldn't be able to supply enough uniforms and equipment for all of the young men and women who would join to rightfully protect our country. Also, if you can't get enough young men and women to join in peacetime, make the incentives better instead of forcing their service. Better pay brings more applicants and why shouldn't their pay be better? After all, they're willing to put their lives on the line to protect us all.

I don't understand why the guy who ended the draft for all you kids, Mike Gravel, doesn't get more support. He's the only canidate that's telling the truth.

At 53 years of age, I'm not exactly a kid. My youngest son is 21 year of age and also wouldn't be affected by a draft. I lived during the Vietnam draft, so I know how a draft is perceived. America is supposed to be about freedom. How is forcing someone into servitude representative of freedom? How can we praise our troops for fighting for American principles and freedom when they themselves are slaves of the government?
